How did this happen?

It is now clear to doctors and to us that the genetic mutation the girls have is autosomal recessive. That means Adam and I have a 1 in 4 chance of having a baby with the disease.

The disease we carry is obviously very rare, or at least presenting itself in a very rare way. Yesterday we met with a biochemist metabolic specialist from U of M who, like everyone else, is very puzzled by our case. He, along with specialists from Cleveland Clinic, Johns Hopkins, and DeVos Childrens, is studying our case and trying to figure out what it is.

But how did two people in the world who carried this super rare gene meet up and have children? Adam and I just happened to have this rare gene in our bloodline and just happened to meet up and fall in love? Well, it is something that only God could ordain...

-Adam just happened to go to Calvin for college, even though he had never heard of the dutch reformed tradition

-Nathan just happened to work at Baker Bookhouse with me and just happened to force us to meet

-I just happened to be one of the only people in my family to marry a non-dutch person (LOL)... which should strengthen our bloodline, not weaken it!

Anyway, we are as puzzled as you are, that of all the people in the world to marry, we met and fell in love, and we both have this crazy rare genetic mutation that makes a very rare disease. It could only be from God! He ordains everything, including the fact that we now have two very special girls to love and take care of.

  1. I think I already mentioned this but I'm sure these two little angels just needed the best parents and God brought you two together several years ago for just this purpose. Enjoy your beautiful family! Those baby girls have wonderful parents and awesome big brothers! They are 2 lucky little girls!

  2. Just went to my next blog and this was the quote posted there: "I believe that everything happens for a reason. People change so that you can learn to let go, things go wrong so that you appreciate them when they're right, you believe lies so you eventually learn to trust yourself, and sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together." — Marilyn Monroe

  4. Emily, it's amazing that you have the strength and perspective to see such a profound truth already. I know it's not necessarily a huge comfort in the midst of surgeries, confusion, CPAPs, etc., but your comment about "Well, it is something that only God could ordain" brought up this almost audible "YES!" response in my soul as I read it.

The continuing faith that you provide brings God incredible glory, and I know He is so proud of and so in love with you. May He continue to bless and protect your precious family.

  7. It's all in his design, Emily. Olivia carries a mutative recessive gene that no one has ever seen before as well. I'm sure if Katie would have had a second child with the same father we would have two special girls as well. Big hugs and you are in my prayers daily!

  8. Thanks for reminding us that we and the events of our lives are not just flukes in a cold random universe, but that there is One who loves us intfinitely, and uses even the hardest trials for our good. Even when we may not know "why" until eternity. We are SOOOOooo thankful that He is the One who brought you two together and later blessed us by causing our paths to cross! We're thanking Him that He continues to hold you, moment by moment, day by day.

    With our love,
    the Hunters

  12. It just happened NathanAugust 27, 2009 at 6:41 PM

And it just happened that Nathan loves the Vedra family very much and sees them as instruments of grace to teach a sinner like me the way in which Christ just happened to love us enough to die for us.
